The route runs through the remote canyon system of Khermen Tsav, over the singing dunes of Khongor Els, and finally across the Jigleg Pass, where winch recoveries are routine rather than exceptional. The Rub’ al-Khali covers around 650,000 square kilometers: larger than France, and largely uninhabited. The Empty Quarter Overland Crossing in southern Oman follows the footsteps of explorer Bertram Thomas, who crossed the desert in 1930.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from the Dhofar region, the route passes the rediscovered ruined city of Ubar, once called the “Atlantis of the Sands”, and continues through dune chains, some rising over 250 meters. Camping here means spending the night in one of the quietest landscapes on Earth: no lights, no engine noise, just sand to the horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simpson Desert Overland Crossing: Australia’s red dune desert<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

More than 1,100 sand ridges stretch across roughly 800 kilometers. The classic route follows the French Line from Dalhousie Springs to Birdsville, about 500 kilometers, at least three to four days, often at an average speed of just 20 km\/h.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between the dunes: no settlements, no fuel, no signal, full self-sufficiency is mandatory. The desert is completely closed from December to mid-March due to extreme heat; the overland crossing travel window runs from May to October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sprengisandur Route: Iceland’s highland overland crossing between two glaciers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not every great crossing needs sand or altitude. The Sprengisandur Route (F26) cuts straight through Iceland’s uninhabited interior, running for about 200 kilometers between the glaciers Hofsj\u00f6kull and Vatnaj\u00f6kull. It’s the longest of Iceland’s highland roads, and one of the most exposed: a landscape of black volcanic sand and moon-like emptiness, with barely another vehicle in sight for hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The road is only accessible to rugged 4WD vehicles with good ground clearance, due to rough surfaces and hazardous unbridged river fords, some running as deep as roughly one meter, where crossing with more than one vehicle is recommended. Fuel is scarce along the way: the two nearest stations sit roughly 240 kilometers apart, which is why unprepared drivers are occasionally seen stranded, waiting for someone to spare them diesel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The route only opens for a few short months each year. Its earliest opening dates range from mid-June to mid-July depending on the section, and the road closes again once the first snow returns: a window measured in weeks, not months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
