Quick Gobi Exploration is our shortest self-drive route into southern Mongolia — built for travellers with a long weekend, a stopover, or a tight window between flights who refuse to leave the country without seeing the desert. You collect your fully-equipped 4×4 at the airport, follow a GPS-mapped route we have already driven, and sleep in beds we have already booked. Everything is arranged. The driving is yours.
In four days you will cross the open steppe, descend into the striped canyons of Tsagaan Suvarga, walk the dunes at Moltsog Els, stand at the Flaming Cliffs where the world’s first dinosaur eggs were found, and finish among the granite outcrops and hidden monastery caves of Baga Gazriin Chuluu.

Day Airport to the White Stupa

Collect your 4x4 at the airport and drive south to the burning layered cliffs of Tsagaan Suvarga.
Day Ger camp near Bayanzag
- Ger Camp
Golden dunes at Moltsog Els in the morning, then sunset over the Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag.
Day North to the Granite Rocks

A long haul north through empty desert to the granite gorges and caves of Baga Gazriin Chuluu.
Day Return to Ulaanbaatar

Quick Gobi Exploration runs on three nights of accommodation, and you choose the style when you book. The base package is camping with the full kit we provide in the vehicle — rooftop tent, kitchen and bedding — at wild sites near Tsagaan Suvarga, Bayanzag and Baga Gazriin Chuluu. For a bed every night, choose Comfort Nomad Basic (+€200 per person) and sleep in a lodge on the rim at Tsagaan Suvarga and in traditional ger camps at Bayanzag and Baga Gazriin Chuluu, all booked by us in advance. Comfort Nomad Premium (+€400 per person) upgrades you to higher-specification camps and lodges with private facilities. What is the "Gobi Dunes to Horse Country" tour?
A 4-day self-drive tour from Ulaanbaatar into the northern and central Gobi with SIXT. You collect a fully equipped 4×4 at the airport and drive a GPS-mapped loop to Tsagaan Suvarga (the White Stupa), the Moltsog Els dunes, the Flaming Cliffs at Bayanzag and the granite rocks of Baga Gazriin Chuluu, with every night booked in advance and 24/7 remote support.
How long is the Gobi Dunes to Horse Country self-drive tour?
Four days and three nights, covering roughly 1,300 km. It is our shortest Gobi route, designed for a long weekend or a stopover.
Can I ride camels and horses on this tour?
Yes. A camel ride with a herding family at the Moltsog Els dunes on day two is included — just let us know in advance.
Do I need off-road driving experience?
No. The route is graded Tour Level 3 and follows established tracks, with asphalt on the first and last stretches. You receive a full vehicle briefing and handover on arrival and a GPS route with every waypoint, camp and fuel stop marked.
What are the main highlights of the tour?
Tsagaan Suvarga (the White Stupa), the sand dunes and camel herds at Moltsog Els, the Flaming Cliffs at Bayanzag where the first dinosaur eggs were discovered, Ongi Monastery, the Valley of a Thousand Horses, and Erdene Zuu Monastery at Kharkhorin — the site of ancient Karakorum.
Does this tour visit Khongoryn Els or Yolyn Am?
No. The Singing Dunes and the Yolyn Am gorge are a further day south; this route keeps to the northern Gobi so it fits in four days. See Gobi Sands (6 days) or Gobi Dunes to Horse Country (9 days) if you want them.
Where do I sleep?
You choose when you book. The base price (Nature’s Nomad Basic) is camping only, with the full camping kit supplied in the vehicle — rooftop tent, kitchen and bedding — at wild sites near Tsagaan Suvarga, Bayanzag and Baga Gazriin Chuluu. For a bed every night, upgrade to Comfort Nomad Basic (+€200 per person): three nights in traditional ger camps or a local hotel, booked by us in advance. Comfort Nomad Premium (+€400 per person) puts you in higher-specification camps and lodges with private facilities. There is no mixed camping/ger option on this route.
When is the best time to do this tour?
The season runs April to October. For the Gobi, May–June and September to mid-October are ideal: mild daytime temperatures, cool nights and far fewer visitors than July–August.
What time do I need to land in Ulaanbaatar?
The tour drives south on the day you arrive, so a morning or early-afternoon landing is required. If your flight lands in the evening, we add a night in Ulaanbaatar and start the next morning.
How much does the tour cost?
From €1,200 per person, based on two travellers per vehicle, in the standard UAZ Patriot. Land Cruiser upgrades and accommodation upgrades are priced in the Book Now section.
