01 Start
Elsen Taserkhai — also known as the “Mini Gobi” — is a sweeping arc of sand dunes tucked between mountains and steppe, just a few hours from Ulaanbaatar. This 6-day retreat is designed for travelers who want to slow down: no back-to-back sightseeing, no forced schedules. Your days are yours to fill with camel rides at sunrise, long walks into the dunes, evenings with a nomadic family, or simply doing nothing at all. For those who want more, a menu of pre-bookable experiences — from candlelight lamb dinners to guided Pallas cat photography — is always on hand.
The package is bookable as a fully private experience, or once a year as a small group departure where two curated activities per day are arranged and included.
1.1 Why choose this tour?
A place to stop. Finally.
Most Mongolia tours keep moving. New camp every night, distances to cover, a checklist of landmarks. This is not that.
The Elsen Taserkhai Sand Dunes Retreat is built around a single, extraordinary location — and the radical idea that staying put is its own kind of adventure. You arrive, you settle in, and for five nights the dunes are yours. No packing up at dawn. No long drives. Just the same golden landscape greeting you each morning, and a completely different way to spend the day.
Some guests ride camels at sunrise and spend the afternoon horizontal in a ger with a book. Others take a long walk deep into the dunes until the silence becomes total, then return for a sound healing session before dinner. A few book the candlelight lamb dinner on their first night and spend the rest of the trip trying to decide if it was the best meal of their lives. There is no right way to do this.
The steppe has a particular effect on people who slow down long enough to feel it. The scale resets something. The absence of noise — real absence, not the muted kind you get with earplugs in a city — changes how you sleep. Mornings at altitude, the smell of grass and woodsmoke, a sky so full of stars it takes a moment to understand what you’re looking at. These are not things you can rush.
Mongolia is one of the least densely populated countries on earth. Out here, you may spend an entire day without seeing another tourist. The nomadic family a short ride from camp has lived on this land for generations. The wild horses grazing the hillside at dusk were not placed there for your enjoyment — they simply live here. That realness is increasingly rare, and it is exactly what makes this place work as a retreat.
Come with things you want to think through, or come with a deliberate plan to think about nothing at all. Both work equally well.

5.3 Accommodation
5.4 Acccommodation
Your base for the retreat is a private ger set up at the edge of the dunes — traditional in shape and material, but finished to a standard that has nothing to do with roughing it. Inside: a proper western bed with a real mattress and soft linen, warm rugs underfoot, hand-painted wooden furniture in the classic Mongolian style, and a cast-iron stove that keeps the space genuinely cosy once the desert night cools down. The felt walls, the painted orange beams, the circular roof opening to a disc of stars — it is one of the most distinctive rooms you will ever sleep in, and it happens to be sitting fifty metres from a sand dune. This is not camping with extra steps. It is a considered, comfortable space that respects the tradition it draws from while making sure you actually sleep well. Beds are made up daily. There is space to unpack properly and leave things out. You come back to it after a long walk or a camel ride and it feels, within a day or two, like somewhere you belong.

5.3 Not Included
Three meals a day are included at camp — breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all taken care of, so the only thing you need to think about is how hungry the fresh air has made you. The one practical item to budget for separately is fuel, if you are driving yourself. Petrol stations are straightforward to find along the route, and your pre-departure guide covers exactly where to stop on longer stages. Guests who prefer a chauffeur transfer have fuel covered as part of the service. Self-drive guests should also note that a refundable rental deposit is required at vehicle collection — full details are provided at booking. Everything else is handled.
