The Russian workhorse Mongolia runs on. Manual, air conditioning, seats five, and genuinely capable on everything this route asks of it. Parts and people who can fix it exist in every soum, which is exactly why it's the standard here.
Upgrade: Toyota Land Cruiser 76 — €950
The legend. Manual, air conditioning, seats five. More comfortable over long track days, more room for gear, and the reliability record that made it the default expedition vehicle worldwide.

A 2024 model, and the only automatic in the fleet. Air conditioning, seats five, modern interior and suspension. The easiest choice if you'd rather not shift gears for eleven days, or if anyone in the party isn't comfortable with a manual.

This is accommodation that does more than provide a bed. A ger camp on the open steppe places you within the same felt walls nomadic families have used for centuries. A well-appointed lodge gives you hot water, a proper meal, and a view no hotel window in the world can match. And on select nights, nothing separates you from the Milky Way at all.
Your evenings become as rich as your days — a balance of genuine comfort, real nature, and a deep sense of place that stays with you long after you fly home.

Everything above is covered. A self-drive trip leaves a few things in your hands.

Roughly €250–350 for the full 1,680 km. Stations are reliable in provincial capitals and marked in your navigation app, but the northern leg has long gaps. Fill up when you can, not when you need to.
Food and drink
Around €25–35 per person per day, less if you cook at camp with the gear provided. Restaurants in the larger towns, shops in the smaller ones.
Also not included: international flights, travel insurance, visa fees where applicable, national park entrance fees, personal expenses and tips.

Do I need off-road experience to drive in Mongolia?
No. This route is graded Level 2 on our 1–5 scale, which means no technical off-road skill, no dune driving and no winching. Around 40% of it runs on dirt tracks, sandy tracks or no track at all, plus a few shallow river fords — but the challenge is patience rather than skill. Expect 40 km/h averages on the northern tracks and four to six hours of driving on a typical day. If you’ve handled a gravel road in Iceland or Scotland, you’ll be fine here. A guide walks you through the vehicle and route on arrival day before you drive anywhere.
What happens if I break down or get stuck in the middle of nowhere?
You have around-the-clock support from a dedicated tour manager by phone or WhatsApp for the whole trip. Every vehicle carries recovery gear and is fully checked before handover, and our standard UAZ Patriot was chosen partly because parts and mechanics for it exist in every soum centre in the country. Your navigation app works offline with all camps and tracks pre-loaded, so you always know exactly where you are — which is the first thing we’ll ask.
When is the best time to see wildflowers in Mongolia?
Wild edelweiss blooms from late June to late August, with peak timing shifting year to year depending on the spring, and varying by altitude within the same week. This route is deliberately built to span more than 1,500 metres of elevation, from river terraces to alpine meadow above 2,000 metres, so different bands peak at different moments. An early spring means the high camps are at their best; a late one favours the valleys. You cross both regardless, which is why booking well ahead costs you nothing in flowers.
Can I do this tour with children, or as a solo traveller?
Both work. Each vehicle seats five, and the route’s short driving days and two rest nights at the lodge on the Eg make it more child-friendly than most Mongolia itineraries — there’s no long desert crossing. Solo travellers can drive the route alone or add our driver service at €100 per day. Additional passengers are €1,200 each, up to two per vehicle.
